London to Paris Cycling event
Škoda UK to sponsor 2011 London-Paris cycling event
Škoda UK will sponsor the eighth annual London-Paris, one of the world’s most exciting long-distance, mass-participation cycling events.
This year’s participants will include professional sports stars, high-profile celebrities and business leaders who will cover a total of 520km over three stages on 23-26 June.
At a press event on 19 April, sporting celebrities including Geoff Thomas, Mark Bright, Lee Dixon and John Salako rode a 40-mile scenic route with the support of a Škoda Superb – the same vehicle that will be part of a 14-strong Škoda fleet that will lead the 365 riders to Paris.
“Our vehicles are ideal for use as a support car,” said Catherine Sleigh, Head of Press and PR for Škoda UK. “They are incredibly reliable, well engineered and offer class-leading space so can carry lots of equipment and withstand the wear and tear that comes with a long distance event. We’re very proud to be involved in such a great event.”
Each of the five speed categories in the race will have a support crew of more than 120 people, including 14 Ride Captains, motorbike outriders and technical support. And just like the legendary Tour de France, roads in the centre of Paris will be closed for the event, giving amateur riders a professional experience.
Although best known today for its cars, Škoda has a long association with cycling, with the company starting out life building bicycles back in 1895. The brand’s passion for bikes remains and Škoda UK is therefore delighted to support the 2011 London-Paris.
